About WoT Encyclopedia

As a complementary tool of Words of Type, we are developing WoT Encyclopedia: an online and multilingual encyclopedia of typographic terms.

200 WORDS, TO BEGIN WITH

The initial version will include 200 terms used in typography, from all kinds of categories, such as typesetting, historical and conceptual terms, type design anatomy, digital typography, and terms specific to certain scripts, among others. This list is expected to expand with future updates.

IN 7 LANGUAGES

WoT Encyclopedia will begin with seven languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. More will join over time as support comes in.

REAL THING COMING SOON

We are building the website as you are reading this, and it is planned for launch in summer 2024.

WoT PEOPLE

Words of Type is a project initiated by French and Chinese type designer Lisa Huang, but many more people have joined the project to make it as great as possible.

Great consideration is brought upon the quality of the descriptions in every language, so experts in typography from various countries (listed below) have joined their effort to translate typography’s very specific vocabulary with human brains.
